Land Rover Ingenium timing chain
failure — repair or scrap?

The Ingenium 2.0 diesel has a well-documented timing chain issue — chain stretch leading to rattling, misfire codes, and on the worst cases, catastrophic engine damage. Here's what your options look like.

The problem

What's gone wrong.

JLR's Ingenium 2.0-litre diesel engine is a relatively modern unit — launched around 2015 and fitted across the Land Rover and Jaguar range. Despite being newer than the older Ford-derived units it replaced, it's developed a reputation for timing chain stretch that can appear surprisingly early in the engine's life.

The symptoms usually start with a rattle on start-up that you may initially dismiss as normal diesel noise, followed by fault codes for camshaft position sensor mismatches. As the chain stretches further, the timing drifts, fuel efficiency drops, the engine runs roughly, and in the worst cases the chain jumps a tooth — at which point the pistons meet the valves and the engine is scrap.

Unlike BMW's infamous N47 (where the chain is at the back of the engine), the Ingenium chain is at the front — which means the timing cover can be accessed without pulling the engine. That's the one piece of good news. Everything else about this repair is expensive.

Models and years affected

  • Land Rover Discovery Sport — 2.0 Ingenium diesel (TD4, SD4) — roughly 2015 onwards
  • Range Rover Evoque — 2.0 Ingenium diesel — roughly 2015 onwards (older 2012-2015 had the earlier Ford-derived engine)
  • Range Rover Velar — 2.0 Ingenium diesel — roughly 2017 onwards
  • Jaguar XE, XF, F-Pace, E-Pace — 2.0 Ingenium diesel — same engine, same issue
  • Later Defender 110/90 with 2.0 diesel — same Ingenium engine family
  • Note: the 3.0-litre Ingenium straight-six (petrol and diesel) is a different design and doesn't share this specific chain-stretch issue

Repair cost reality

If caught early (rattle, no driveability issues yet), a timing chain, guides, tensioner and oil pump chain replacement is around £2,500 to £3,500 at an independent specialist, notably more at a Land Rover main dealer. That's before any related work that turns up once the timing cover is off.

If the chain has jumped or snapped, the valve damage typically means a complete engine rebuild at £4,500 to £7,000+, or a replacement engine fitted at similar money. Used Ingenium engines are available but come with obvious concerns about the same latent issue.

Factory-reconditioned Ingenium engines fitted at a main dealer run £8,500 to £12,000+. On a seven-year-old Discovery Sport that's arguably worth £10,000-£14,000 on the road, you can see how quickly the economics break down.

Repair or scrap — the decision

The scrap decision on an Ingenium-engined Land Rover is almost always painful because these are expensive cars. A seven-year-old Discovery Sport might still be worth £10,000-£14,000 running — but with a blown engine, the numbers change fast. Spend £8,500+ on a factory-reconditioned engine and you've invested almost as much as the car is worth, on a car that's now eight years old and may develop something else.

The honest rule of thumb: if the repair quote is more than half the car's current running value, and the car is out of manufacturer warranty, scrap is usually the right call. That holds whether it's a Discovery Sport at 120,000 miles or a Velar that's just out of warranty.

We buy Land Rovers and Jaguars with engine failures regularly — including non-runners with snapped chains. Free collection across West Suffolk, same-day bank transfer. If you're not sure whether scrap is the right answer for your specific situation, get a quote from us and see the number — it may help you decide, and there's no obligation to sell.

How we help

We buy cars with expensive failures.

We're a local West Suffolk scrap car buyer — based in Bury St Edmunds and covering the whole of IP28–IP33, CO10, IP14 and CB8. We specialise in cars that are past the point of economic repair, including engine-write-off scenarios like this one.

What that means for you in practice:

  • Free collection — we come to your home, your garage, or wherever the car currently sits. You don't need to get it to us.
  • Non-runners welcome — most of the cars we buy don't run. Flat batteries, seized engines, missing keys, blocked-in on a driveway — not a problem.
  • Same-day bank transfer — you see the money arrive before the car goes on the trailer.
  • DVLA notified — we handle the change of keeper so you're not liable for anything once we've taken it.
  • Certificate of Destruction — for genuine end-of-life vehicles, arranged via our partner Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF).

Use the reg lookup above to start. We'll come back to you with a quote, usually within the hour during working hours.

Failure-mode FAQs

Your questions.

Will you buy a Discovery Sport or Evoque with a snapped chain?

Yes. Non-runners with Ingenium chain failure are a regular enquiry for us. Free collection across West Suffolk. Just tell us the reg and a brief summary of what happened and we'll quote.

My Ingenium rattles on cold start — should I be worried?

Probably yes, if it's a genuine metallic rattle rather than normal diesel noise. Short answer: get it looked at properly, and don't put the diagnosis off. The difference between fixing a stretching chain and fixing a snapped chain is the difference between £3,000 and £6,000+.

Is this covered by the Land Rover warranty?

If the car is still inside the manufacturer warranty (typically 3 years / 60,000 miles from new, sometimes extended), absolutely pursue that route first. JLR has handled some goodwill claims outside warranty too — worth trying if you're close to the edge. If you're well out of warranty, it's your problem.

Can you collect from a garage or dealership?

Yes. If your car is at a JLR dealer or independent Land Rover specialist where you've had the diagnosis, we can collect directly from there. Just give us the address and a contact when you enquire.
