Ford PowerShift gearbox
failure — repair or scrap?

Ford's DPS6 PowerShift dual-clutch gearbox is one of the most problematic transmissions ever fitted to a mainstream car. Juddering, limp mode, repeat failures after repairs. Here's where you stand.

The problem

What's gone wrong.

The DPS6 PowerShift is Ford's 6-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox, fitted to Fiestas, Focuses, EcoSports, B-Maxes and some C-Maxes from around 2010 to 2016. Unlike a conventional automatic (which uses a torque converter) or most other dual-clutch gearboxes (which run the clutch packs in oil), the DPS6 uses dry clutches — and that's the root of most of the problems.

The typical symptom progression is: a noticeable judder when pulling away from standstill, especially when warm; slipping or delayed engagement; then limp-home mode with warning lights on the dash. By that point the clutch packs are worn out and often the mechatronic control unit (TCM/TCU) has also been damaged.

Ford has been through multiple rounds of warranty extensions and service campaigns on these gearboxes, including a US class-action lawsuit. Many UK cars have already had one or even two gearbox replacements under goodwill — but owners then face full-cost repairs when the next failure occurs out of warranty.

Models and years affected

  • Ford Fiesta — 1.0 EcoBoost, 1.5/1.6 TDCi automatic — roughly 2011 to 2016
  • Ford Focus — 1.0 EcoBoost, 2.0 TDCi (including ST-Line) automatic — roughly 2010 to 2016
  • Ford EcoSport — 1.0 EcoBoost automatic — roughly 2014 onwards
  • Ford B-Max — 1.0 EcoBoost automatic — production years 2012 to 2017
  • Ford C-Max — automatic variants in the affected period
  • Some Focus ST-Line models even with higher-output engines used the same troubled gearbox

Repair cost reality

The straightforward repair is a clutch pack replacement at £1,200 to £1,800 at an independent specialist, sometimes available with a reconditioned unit. If the mechatronic control unit (TCM) has also failed — which is common — that adds £800 to £1,400, bringing the total to £2,000 to £3,200.

Ford main dealers typically quote more. More critically, a lot of DPS6 repairs don't last. Industry reports suggest repeat failures within 30,000-60,000 miles are common, and some cars have been through three or four gearbox rebuilds in their lifetime. Each one is £1,500-£2,500 out of pocket.

A complete replacement DPS6 gearbox fitted — either reconditioned or new — runs £2,500 to £4,500+. On a 10-year-old Fiesta that's worth £2,500 on the road, you can see the problem.

Repair or scrap — the decision

The PowerShift decision is different from most. The first repair isn't always economically silly — a £1,500 clutch pack on a Fiesta that's otherwise solid might buy you 2-3 years of trouble-free driving. The problem is knowing whether it's going to come back.

If your gearbox has already been replaced or rebuilt once and is failing again, the honest answer is that it's very likely to keep failing. The dry-clutch DPS6 is fundamentally not robust, and spending another £2,000+ on a car that's already cost you repeatedly is typically money wasted.

If this is the first major gearbox issue on an older Fiesta or Focus, weigh the repair cost against the car's value and your appetite for further PowerShift problems. If the car is 10+ years old and at its second failure, scrap is almost always the right call. We buy these cars regularly — running or not. How we help

We buy cars with expensive failures.

We're a local West Suffolk scrap car buyer — based in Bury St Edmunds and covering the whole of IP28–IP33, CO10, IP14 and CB8. We specialise in cars that are past the point of economic repair, including engine-write-off scenarios like this one.

What that means for you in practice:

  • Free collection — we come to your home, your garage, or wherever the car currently sits. You don't need to get it to us.
  • Non-runners welcome — most of the cars we buy don't run. Flat batteries, seized engines, missing keys, blocked-in on a driveway — not a problem.
  • Same-day bank transfer — you see the money arrive before the car goes on the trailer.
  • DVLA notified — we handle the change of keeper so you're not liable for anything once we've taken it.
  • Certificate of Destruction — for genuine end-of-life vehicles, arranged via our partner Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF).

Use the reg lookup above to start. We'll come back to you with a quote, usually within the hour during working hours.

Failure-mode FAQs

Your questions.

Will you buy a Ford with a failed PowerShift gearbox?

Yes. PowerShift failures are one of the most common enquiries we get on Fiestas and Focuses. Free collection across West Suffolk. Tell us the reg and a brief summary and we'll quote — runners and non-runners both fine.

Is my PowerShift covered by extended warranty?

Ford extended coverage on some PowerShift gearboxes to 7 years or 100,000 miles, and some VINs had further coverage added through service campaigns. Call Ford customer relations with your VIN to check — if it's covered, they'll pay for the repair. Most cars are now out of that extended coverage window though.

I've already had the gearbox replaced once — will it fail again?

In our experience, repeat failures are common. The DPS6's fundamental design limitations aren't solved by replacement. A reconditioned unit typically has a 12-24 month warranty, but the car's wider reliability reputation isn't fixable. If yours has failed for a second or third time, scrap is usually the right decision.

My PowerShift just judders a bit when pulling away — is it failing?

That judder is the classic DPS6 symptom. It typically gets worse over time — first with delayed engagement, then limp-home mode, then full failure. You're not necessarily facing an immediate scrap decision, but start planning for it rather than waiting for the car to strand you somewhere.

What about PowerShift on Focus ST or RS?

The Focus ST and RS used different gearboxes (6-speed manual or later the Getrag MMT6). They aren't affected by the DPS6 issue. If your car has the PowerShift badge on a lower-spec model, though, it's the DPS6.
